Porter’s Full Listing Gives Dallas a Different Cornerback Question

Joey Porter Jr., Malik Hooker and CeeDee Lamb were listed as full participants Monday, while Cobie Durant and DeMarvion Overshown were absent. Tyler Smith’s limited return creates a separate decision before Thursday.

Joey Porter Jr.’s ankle supplied the clearest bit of good news in Dallas’ Monday injury report: the cornerback was listed as a full participant. For the Cowboys, that places Porter on one side of an availability divide that also includes a missing cornerback, two absent defensive contributors and a returning offensive lineman whose clock is only beginning.

The report came from the Cowboys’ walkthrough in Frisco, where Porter received the full designation despite his ankle issue. Malik Hooker, listed with a forearm injury, and CeeDee Lamb, listed with a thigh issue, joined him as full participants. Cobie Durant and DeMarvion Overshown did not participate, both carrying hamstring designations.

Because Monday was a walkthrough, those labels were estimates rather than measurements from a conventional full-speed practice. They describe Dallas’ current view of each player’s participation, not a final ruling on Thursday’s game. Tuesday is scheduled to provide the only full practice of the short week, so the report’s encouraging names still have another checkpoint ahead.

Porter’s listing matters in practical terms. With Durant absent, Dallas has one cornerback listed as full and another unavailable for Monday’s work. That does not settle the rotation, and it says nothing about how either hamstring or ankle will respond to heavier activity. It does give the Cowboys a cleaner starting point than they would have had if both players were limited or absent.

The distinction between the two defensive backs is worth keeping intact. Durant’s hamstring issue removes a cornerback from the day’s practice picture. Porter’s ankle issue remains attached to a player who took part without a restriction in the estimate.

Porter received the favorable participation estimate; Durant received the nonparticipation designation. Injury reports are occasionally written like accounting ledgers, but those two entries carry different roster consequences.

Hooker’s full designation provides another favorable defensive entry. His forearm issue appeared on the report, yet he was listed without a participation limit. The same cannot be said for Overshown, who missed the walkthrough with a hamstring problem.

Their positions are different, and so are the choices Dallas would face if both statuses remain unchanged: Hooker’s listing preserves a safety option, while Overshown’s absence leaves a linebacker spot to account for.

Lamb gives the offense its most encouraging line. He was listed as full despite the thigh issue, which removes a restriction from the Monday estimate before the Cowboys manage a quick turnaround from Sunday’s narrow comeback victory over Houston.

That is useful breathing room for an offense preparing for another game in the same week, even if full participation on a walkthrough should not be mistaken for a Thursday guarantee.

The report also listed offensive lineman Drew Shelton as a nonparticipant because of a hamstring issue. His absence makes the health of the front worth watching, but Tyler Smith’s development is a separate matter rather than a simple replacement announcement.

Dallas opened Smith’s 21-day practice window Monday, allowing its All-Pro left guard to resume practice after surgery for a torn thumb ligament suffered during training camp. Smith was listed as limited in the walkthrough. The move places him back in the evaluation group; it does not put him on the game roster or establish that he will play Thursday against Tampa Bay.

Smith has until Oct. 26 for Dallas to decide whether to activate him, and the club would have to clear a spot on its 53-player roster to do so. That deadline matters because Thursday’s game is Oct. 8. The Cowboys can consider Smith for the short week without treating Thursday as the only opportunity to use the window.

His limited Monday participation is an opening, not a verdict.

That leaves Dallas with a roster that is broader than a simple list of healthy and injured players suggests. Porter, Hooker and Lamb provided the strongest Monday participation labels. Durant and Overshown remained absent, with Shelton also missing.

Smith returned to practice under a longer evaluation period. Tuesday must clarify how the full listings hold up, while the Cowboys still need answers on the absent players and whether Smith’s window produces a Thursday option or merely a more informed decision later.
