A recent study conducted by researchers at Southern Methodist University has revealed that fully autonomous vehicles could potentially decrease traffic delays in the Dallas-Fort Worth region by up to 33 percent, all without the need for additional highway lanes.
This research is particularly relevant for Allen, Texas, located just 30 miles northeast of Dallas, as the state is quickly becoming a hub for the driverless vehicle industry.
Led by Khaled Abdelghany, a fellow at the university's engineering and humanity institute, the study utilized traffic modeling funded in part by the region's council of governments. The research involved 25 experiments simulating traffic conditions in 2045, analyzing scenarios with varying levels of autonomous vehicle adoption: 100 percent, 50 percent, and 25 percent.
The findings indicated that in a fully automated environment, delays could decrease by as much as 33 percent, while the time spent in congested traffic could drop by at least 19 percent.
The underlying principle of this reduction is straightforward. Human drivers often create traffic jams through inconsistent braking and spacing, which causes disruptions that propagate through traffic. According to Abdelghany, the smoother and more synchronized driving patterns of autonomous vehicles could alleviate these issues.
Currently, Texas is leading the way in the implementation of driverless technology, particularly in the freight sector. Aurora Innovation has initiated commercial driverless deliveries along the I-45 corridor between Dallas and Houston, marking the first such service in the U.S. These trucks operate without human drivers and are monitored remotely, transporting a variety of goods including retail inventory and perishable items.
The I-45 route was strategically chosen, as it accounts for nearly half of Texas's truck freight movement. Aurora has expanded its operations to include a second route from Fort Worth to El Paso and plans to deploy hundreds of trucks.
Other companies, such as Kodiak Robotics and Waymo Via, are also advancing autonomous trucking in Texas, solidifying the state's position as a leader in this emerging field.
On the passenger side, Waymo has been providing a paid robotaxi service in Austin and has recently expanded its offerings to select riders in Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio, with plans for broader availability later this year. The company is actively recruiting for full-time positions in Texas.
While there are concerns about job displacement due to automation, industry experts suggest that many roles will evolve rather than disappear. Positions such as technicians, remote operators, and logistics staff will still be necessary to support the driverless operations.
Estimates indicate that the autonomous vehicle sector could contribute approximately $70 billion to the U.S. GDP and create around 9 million jobs globally by 2030, although these projections should be approached with caution.
