A Dramatic Eighth Inning Turns the Tide

The Oakland Athletics ended their five-game losing streak with a dramatic rally, scoring four unanswered runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to defeat the Houston Astros 4-3 on Saturday. The win improves Oakland’s record to 50-80, while the Astros fall to .500 at 65-65.

The game remained tight through six innings before a pair of home runs set the stage for the late surge. In the third inning, Athletics hitter Walton launched a 422-foot home run to center field, giving Oakland an early 1-0 lead. The Astros responded in the fourth when Diaz doubled to left, allowing Walker to cross the plate and tie the game at 1-1.

Houston reclaimed the lead in the seventh inning. Varsho hit a 358-foot home run to left field, making it 2-1 for Houston. Later in the same frame, Peña singled to center field and Wade Jr. scored on the play, extending the Astros’ advantage to 3-1.

Relief Pitching Secures the Win

The game turned on its head in the eighth inning against Houston reliever Bennett Sousa. After Sousa entered with the Astros leading, he allowed two wild pitches that brought Gelof to third base and enabled McNeil to score twice, narrowing the gap to 3-2.

Butler then singled to right field, driving in Gelof to tie the game at 3-3. The tying run was followed by another scoring opportunity when Heim grounded out to shortstop, allowing Butler to score from second base and give Oakland a 4-3 lead.

Oakland’s bullpen held firm to preserve the victory. Luis Medina earned the win (5-3) by pitching one innings of relief, allowing two runs on three hits. Hogan Harris recorded his 11th hold with a scoreless inning, striking out one batter. Elvis Alvarado secured his third save with another perfect frame, fanning two batters without allowing any hits or walks.

Strong Starts Define Early Game

Athletics starter Jacob Lopez pitched six innings, allowing one earned run on three hits while striking out nine batters. He provided enough offensive support in the eighth to secure the win despite not earning the decision.

For Houston, Hunter Brown started strong, pitching 5.2 innings and allowing just one earned run on seven hits with four strikeouts. AJ Blubaugh followed with 1.1 scoreless innings, striking out two batters without giving up any hits or walks. However, a brief appearance by Bennett Sousa proved costly, as he allowed three runs in just one-third of an inning.

The game was played at Daikin Park in Houston, Texas, with an attendance of 31,009 fans watching the decisive finish unfold.
