A new group of Allen residents has started a seven-month look behind the scenes at the city's school district.

Allen ISD said Monday that its 2026-27 Leadership Academy cohort held its first meeting, hearing from Acting Superintendent Kim McLaughlin, members of the Board of Trustees and representatives of the Foundation For Allen Schools. The participants then visited Boyd Elementary School, where Principal Julie DeLeon talked about the work of students and staff on that campus.

How the academy works

The program is aimed at community members who want to understand how a district of about 20,000 students and nearly 3,000 employees runs. Participants meet once a month for seven months. Over that stretch they tour campuses at each grade level and meet with principals, students, trustees and administrators, with sessions built around how departments work together on student programs and district goals.

The district did not say how many people are in this year's cohort or when the next sessions are scheduled.

What comes after

Allen ISD describes graduates as a network of informed residents who may be called on for future planning work. The district listed strategic planning, campus and district improvement teams, focus groups and other committees as possible roles.

The district posted a photo gallery from the first meeting on its website.
