The Tennessee Health Facilities Commission has granted approval for Ascension Saint Thomas to build Fairview’s first freestanding emergency department. The project represents a $20.6 million investment aimed at addressing healthcare demands from Fairview’s expanding population, which has increased by more than 36% since 2010.

The new facility will be located near the intersection of Fairview Boulevard and Audubon Cove. It is designed to operate as part of a larger healthcare campus that includes an outpatient center from Dickson Medical Associates. This combined site intends to provide both emergency and outpatient services in one location, reducing the need for residents to travel outside the community for care.

The 11,345-square-foot emergency department will be affiliated with Ascension Saint Thomas Hospital West and will deliver hospital-level care. The facility will include 10 treatment rooms, two triage rooms, and one trauma room. It will also feature on-site imaging services such as CT scans, X-rays, and ultrasounds, along with a full-service laboratory and emergency physicians.

Dickson Medical Associates, which has served the region since 1940, will expand its operations at the new campus. The outpatient center will offer primary care, express care, behavioral health services, and medical and surgical subspecialties. This expansion supports coordinated care alongside the on-site emergency services.

Ascension Saint Thomas President and CEO Fahad Tahir stated that the organization appreciates the support of local leaders and the community in securing the state Certificate of Need approval. Dickson Medical Associates-Fairview Family Physician Dr. Daniel Sherwood noted that the partnership makes it easier for patients to access coordinated care close to home.

Ascension Saint Thomas is a faith-based, nonprofit health system with a 125-year history. It is part of Ascension, one of the largest Catholic health systems in the United States. The system operates 18 hospitals and 320 sites of care across 45 counties in Tennessee.

Further details regarding the construction timeline or specific opening date for the new facility are not yet clear.
