Allen’s 7-on-7 football team is channeling disappointment from a controversial state championship loss into motivation for the fall season. The Eagles appeared to secure their first title against Keller Central, but a late penalty allowed the Chargers to execute an untimed play that sealed a 26-21 victory.
The confusion stemmed from Allen players rushing the field prematurely, believing the final horn had ended the game. Officials threw a flag, granting Keller Central one additional play, which resulted in the game-winning score. Running back Lyndon Spriggs acknowledged the heartbreak but emphasized the team's resolve to avoid leaving their careers without a ring.
Despite the loss, Allen demonstrated offensive firepower throughout the tournament, becoming the only Division I team to score at least 33 points in all three group games. Quarterback Ty Snell and receiver Zach Williams, both rising sophomores with scholarship offers, led the charge. Williams, who recently turned 15, was instrumental in victories over Mansfield Timberview and defending champion The Woodlands.
Spriggs noted that while 7-on-7 is entertaining, the focus now shifts to the traditional 11-man summer season. The team hopes to translate this experience into success when the regular season begins.
