Two head coaches from North Texas programs have been included in a national ranking of top prep sports leaders. MaxPreps recently released a list of the 100 best head coaches in the country, featuring Allen wrestling coach Jerry Best and Prosper Walnut Grove soccer coach Trent Kutch.
The two educators were part of a group of 11 selections from Texas. The state representation also included five coaches from the Metroplex area. Those regional honorees are Highland Park volleyball coach Michael Dearman, Duncanville head football coach Reginald Samples, and South Oak Cliff head football coach Jason Todd.
Best has led the Allen wrestling program since 2002. Under his guidance, the Eagles have established themselves as the leading wrestling program in the state. The team has secured 16 state titles over the last 17 seasons.
During the 2025-26 campaign, Allen won its state championship with a point total of 199.5. This victory margin of 87 points over second-place The Woodlands College Park was the largest for the school in four years.
Kutch guided the Walnut Grove boys soccer team to consecutive undefeated Class 5A Division I state championships. The Wildcats finished the 2025-26 season with a 31-0 record. This achievement marks the first time in University Interscholastic League boys soccer history that a team has won back-to-back undefeated state titles.
