Allen high school rising junior Maya Ogbogu is preparing for a busy summer that includes representing the United States at the FIVB Girls U17 World Championships. The event is scheduled to take place in Chile from August 6 through August 16. This opportunity follows her participation last fall with the inaugural U.S. girls U17 national team during the NORCECA U17 Continental Championship in Costa Rica.
Ogbogu described the international experience as a significant learning moment, noting the differences in playing styles compared to domestic teams. She expressed enthusiasm about returning to the international circuit with her teammates, stating that the upcoming tournament remains a primary focus for her and her peers.
Before departing for Chile, Ogbogu is competing with her Texas Advantage Volleyball club team in Indianapolis. She is participating in the USA Volleyball Girls Junior National Championships, which began on June 25 and continue through Friday. This club competition occurs shortly after she finalized her college decision.
Ogbogu made a verbal commitment to play for Texas A&M on June 16. The date was significant because college programs are prohibited from directly contacting prospective recruits until June 15 following a high school athlete’s sophomore year. Although she had hoped to decide before her junior season began, the timing of the offer accelerated her timeline.
She visited campuses at SMU, the University of Texas, and Texas A&M to evaluate daily life for student-athletes at each institution.
Ranked as the top overall prospect in the country for the Class of 2018 by PrepDig, Ogbogu considered offers from Texas and Stanford alongside Texas A&M. She credited current and former Texas A&M players for their guidance during the recruiting process, noting that the coaching staff demonstrated a strong interest in her development.
