City Missions is continuing its efforts to assist individuals experiencing homelessness in Collin County and the surrounding region. The group has operated for more than five years, utilizing a mobile outreach unit to distribute essential items directly to those in need. Volunteers gather on Saturdays to provide necessities such as socks and hygiene products, aiming to build trust and relationships with the people they serve.
Cherie Privett, the founder and executive director of City Missions, explained that the team visits areas where they have established connections with friends experiencing homelessness. The group remains adaptable to shifting needs and locations. A core value of the organization is preserving the dignity of those it helps while connecting them with resources to achieve stability.
These resources include medical care, identification cards, shower facilities through Street Side Showers, recovery programs, and housing solutions.
The organization also operates a mobile closet near downtown Plano twice a month. Privett noted a specific need for men’s clothing, stating that approximately 80 percent of the individuals served are men, yet most donations received are for women. Local churches, faith-based groups, businesses, and individuals support these efforts.
Recently, two Wylie schools contributed to the cause. Students at Harrison Intermediate collected hygiene products and other items during the last semester. Additionally, the Burnett Junior High PTA selected City Missions to receive a grant that was presented in May. Privett mentioned that her husband, Kevin Privett, co-founded the organization and works for Wylie ISD, describing the support from local schools as meaningful.
Privett emphasized that new donors and existing partnerships are vital as needs change with each season. One of the primary goals is funding a future resource center. Plans call for this space to be located in Plano, which would provide a consistent location for individuals to access support, resources, and community. The organization is still actively working toward securing funding for this project.
