Former Allen quarterback Kyler Murray returned to Eagle Stadium on Friday night to watch his alma mater defeat DeSoto 50-6 in a non-district matchup. The victory improved Allen's season record to 2-0, with freshman quarterback Ty Snell leading the offense in a dominant performance.
Senior running back Lyndon Spriggs, who wears Murray's former No. 1 jersey, highlighted the game with a 77-yard punt return for a touchdown. Spriggs acknowledged that having Murray on the sideline added extra motivation to perform well. "Not going to lie, I had to make sure I was on my A game," Spriggs said.
"It's a big shoe to fill. I think I'm a really good athlete just like he was. He made this whole program known for those three state championships that he put up there.
So just knowing that I really have to be one of them guys to wear this jersey, it's an honor."
Murray, who has not returned to the stadium since approximately 2021, described the visit as an opportunity to reconnect with the community and the program where his career began. He noted the strong local support for the team on Friday nights.
"You just see the community shuts down on Friday nights to see the amount of pride and honor that the guys take in putting this uniform on," Murray said.
Before winning the Heisman Trophy at Oklahoma and being selected as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, Murray established himself as a high school football legend in Texas. As Allen's starting quarterback, he never lost a game and led the team to three consecutive state championships from 2012 to 2014. The Eagles finished with a 43-0 record in his starts.
Reflecting on his time at Allen, Murray expressed appreciation for the friendships formed during those years. "Being 10 years removed from this, it's kind of sad, but this was some of the best moments of my life, playing high school football with a lot of my boys, a lot of guys who are still, to this day, my best friends," he said.
