Two Republican Texas House members from Collin County are backing Attorney General Ken Paxton in his contest against Democratic State Representative James Talarico. Representatives Matt Shaheen of Prosper and Jeff Leach of Allen had previously endorsed incumbent John Cornyn and were among the lawmakers who voted to impeach Paxton in May 2023.
Leach also served as an impeachment manager during the Attorney General’s Senate trial, where Paxton was acquitted.
Shaheen and Leach stated that the primary election has concluded and it is now time for Republicans to unite behind the chosen nominees. Shaheen noted that Paxton won the primary overwhelmingly and has demonstrated an ability to mobilize the Republican base. Leach emphasized that supporting the full ticket is essential, warning that abstaining from voting in the general election would effectively favor Talarico.
Regarding their recent interactions with Paxton, Leach said he has reached out but has not yet received a response. Shaheen reported having a brief conversation with the Attorney General, describing it as positive and noting their mutual commitment to helping Republican candidates win. Paxton’s campaign advisor, Nick Maddux, expressed gratitude for the endorsements, stating that both parties share the goal of keeping Texas red.
