The Atlanta Hawks came back to beat the San Antonio Spurs 123-116 in an NBA preseason game on Thursday, Oct. 8, at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio. It was the Spurs' first exhibition game of the fall, and 18,354 fans were in the building. Atlanta is now 1-1 in the preseason; San Antonio is 0-1.

Game Flow

San Antonio controlled the first quarter and led 39-20 after 12 minutes. Atlanta answered with a 42-30 second quarter, but the Spurs still went to the locker room ahead 69-62.

The Hawks won the third quarter 31-26 to cut the gap to 95-93 heading into the fourth. Atlanta then outscored San Antonio 30-21 in the final period. The Hawks moved in front for good on an Asa Newell alley-oop layup with 5:49 left that made it 110-109, and they pushed the margin to 12 points at 121-109 with under two minutes to play.

Key Performers

Newell came off the bench to score 16 points for Atlanta on 5-of-8 shooting and 5-of-6 at the free-throw line, most of it in the closing minutes. Kingston Flemings added 15 points and five assists, and Dyson Daniels pulled down 11 rebounds to go with 13 points.

For the Spurs, Dylan Harper scored 16 points with four assists. Stephon Castle and David Jones Garcia each had 14 points, and Keldon Johnson grabbed seven rebounds. Victor Wembanyama played 17 minutes and finished with nine points and six rebounds.
