Baylor University's football team is undergoing a significant defensive overhaul with the appointment of Joe Klanderman as the new coordinator. Previously, Klanderman led a top 30 ranked defense at Kansas State, and he steps in at a time when the Bears have struggled, allowing an average of 30.8 points and over 399.9 yards per game since 2023.
Klanderman's approach utilizes a 3-3-5 formation designed to enhance versatility and challenge opposing quarterbacks. This strategy includes three defensive linemen to engage blockers and free up linebackers for ball pursuit. The new scheme aims to improve critical metrics, particularly in red-zone defense and third-down situations, areas where Klanderman's previous defenses excelled.
The revamped defensive line features new talent, including Indiana transfer Hosea Wheeler, alongside Garrick Ponder, Jordan Mack, and Jamaal Whyce Jr., all tasked with pressuring quarterbacks and strengthening run defense. Additionally, the secondary, bolstered by experienced players and new transfers, is expected to limit explosive plays.
With returning players like LeVar Thorton and Jacob Redding, Baylor's defense is set to adopt diverse coverage strategies against formidable Big 12 offenses.
These changes reflect a concerted effort to rejuvenate Baylor's defense ahead of the upcoming season, with the hope of replicating Klanderman's success in creating turnovers, as his defenses averaged approximately 1.7 takeaways per game.
