Castellanos joined Texas Tech late in preseason camp as an emergency backup. The move came after the transfer portal had closed and Brendan Sorsby’s situation had concluded. Hammond, meanwhile, is still recovering from a torn ACL, according to the report.
Against Houston last Friday, Castellanos threw an interception on the first play while trying to throw the ball away, Red Raiders Wire reported. He later took another snap near the goal line and ran 3 yards for a touchdown. His appearances have produced both useful plays and turnovers.
Sports Illustrated writer Pat Forde listed Castellanos’ role among 10 questions that could influence the college football season. Texas Tech has not determined how it will use him going forward, including whether he will continue appearing near the goal line.
