A defense attorney representing former TCU football player Jacob Fields asserts that the coaching staff was aware of rising tensions on the practice field before a locker room altercation on August 13. Fields faces an aggravated assault charge for allegedly injuring teammate Dozie Ezukanma, who was hospitalized for three days due to a brain bleed.
Attorney Coby DuBose contests claims made in the arrest warrant affidavit, which states that Fields struck Ezukanma unexpectedly. DuBose contends that Fields went to greet Ezukanma prior to the incident. He claims that Fields had previously communicated his frustrations to the coaching staff regarding rough treatment during practices, emphasizing that Fields expressed he was tired of being subjected to unfair hits.
DuBose argues that the TCU coaching staff did not adequately address the situation and might have acted to avert the conflict. He described the events leading to the fight as exceeding typical football roughness, citing instances of illegal hits and being spat on. Fields’ agent, Phillip “Red” Miller, echoed DuBose's assertions, noting the presence of unnecessary aggression during practices.
In contrast, a source within the TCU football program challenged DuBose's statements, and athletic director Mike Buddie indicated that the coaching staff handled the situation appropriately. The source, who requested anonymity due to the ongoing investigation, expressed skepticism regarding the accounts from DuBose and Miller. Further details about the investigation and the actions of the coaching staff remain unclear as developments unfold.
