The Cowboys will be without running back Malik Davis for their season-opening game against the New York Giants after he injured his hip during Friday’s practice. Davis was taken off the field by cart, and the team planned further evaluations.
His expected absence length remains unknown, though ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported that Dallas was preparing for him to miss an extended stretch, citing a source who called the injury “bad.” ESPN’s Todd Archer also reported that Davis would not play against New York.
Davis had strengthened his case for a role with 12 preseason carries covering 68 yards, or 5.7 yards per attempt, plus a touchdown reception. Javonte Williams is expected to continue as the primary back. In 16 starts during the 2025 season, Williams ran for 1,201 yards and 11 touchdowns on 252 attempts. He added 35 receptions for 137 yards and two receiving touchdowns.
Emari Demercado could take on additional work. Dallas claimed him from the Kansas City Chiefs’ waivers on Sept. 1. In three seasons with the Arizona Cardinals, he totaled 819 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 126 carries, along with 50 catches for 324 yards and one receiving touchdown.
Hunter Luepke, who has mainly played fullback but also has experience at running back and other offensive spots, and practice-squad back Israel Abanikanda, formerly of the New York Jets, are other options. Sports.yahoo.com published the report Sept. 12, 2026.
