Chris Murray, a fifth-year senior linebacker at Auburn, is stepping up as a vital contributor after teammate JJ Faulk suffered an injury during preseason camp. As the team gears up for their season opener against Baylor on September 5, Murray is advocating for significant playing time, competing with Da'Shawn Womack and Jared Smith for a spot.
Auburn's coach, Alex Golesh, has praised Murray's impressive recovery from an injury that sidelined him for the first week and a half of camp. Golesh remarked on Murray's recent performance, highlighting the importance of the upcoming days for his chances to secure a starting position.
Murray's football career started at TCU in 2021, where he played for two seasons before moving to Sam Houston State for the 2023 and 2024 seasons. He joined Auburn ahead of the 2025 season, where he recorded 15 tackles, 3.5 sacks, and 3.5 tackles for loss in his first year.
In March, the NCAA granted him a waiver, extending his eligibility for a sixth year and allowing him to join the team late in the spring practice period.
Reflecting on his journey, Murray noted the advantages of his experience, stating that he can guide younger players in their development while also focusing on his own growth. As Auburn prepares for a scrimmage on Saturday, the team is working to finalize its lineup for the upcoming game against Baylor.
