The Dallas Cowboys opened the 2026 NFL season with a 28-20 defeat against the New York Giants, as eight penalties totaling 85 yards compounded execution problems. Head coach Brian Schottenheimer said the team failed to reach its expected standard and called the result a humbling experience.
He said Dallas did not begin well on offense or defense and accepted responsibility for mistakes made by the coaching staff and players.
Rookie Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart threw for 230 yards and gained another 54 on the ground. Dallas struggled to contain him outside the pocket, where he extended plays and found more room. The Cowboys entered the season with new defensive personnel after giving up an NFL-high 30.1 points per game in 2025.
Dak Prescott went 22-for-34 with 175 passing yards and touchdown throws to CeeDee Lamb and Javonte Williams. Williams also scored on a run, but a taunting penalty against him after a touchdown pushed Brandon Aubrey’s extra-point attempt farther from the goal posts. Schottenheimer said younger players made execution mistakes, while also saying they must improve quickly and that Dallas needs better coaching.
The Cowboys are scheduled to host Washington next Sunday. No further preparation details were provided.
