The Dallas Cowboys have waived quarterback Joe Milton as part of recent roster changes. Milton, who joined the team in April 2025 following a trade with the New England Patriots, had been in competition for the backup quarterback role against Sam Howell throughout the offseason.
On the same day, the Cowboys added running back Emari Demercado, who was claimed off waivers from the Kansas City Chiefs. This acquisition required the team to release Milton to fit Demercado onto the 53-man roster.
During the 2026 preseason, Milton participated in three games, successfully completing 29 out of 43 passes for a total of 378 yards, along with three touchdowns and no interceptions. He also rushed 12 times, gaining 14 yards and scoring one rushing touchdown.
Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer noted his belief in both Milton and Howell as strong candidates for the backup position. He recalled a conversation with Milton that demonstrated the quarterback's confidence in his skills. Schottenheimer acknowledged the difficulties of mastering the team's intricate offensive system, which demands a deep understanding from quarterbacks.
Milton remarked on his growing comfort with the Cowboys' offense, highlighting the significance of grasping the playbook and executing plays effectively. Following his release, Milton is subject to waivers and may have the chance to join the Cowboys' practice squad if he goes unclaimed. Currently, the Cowboys' quarterback lineup includes Dak Prescott and Sam Howell.
