Head coach Brian Schottenheimer acknowledged Howell's slight lead in the competition but also highlighted Milton's notable improvements. He stated that the training camp battle is very close, with Howell perhaps having a narrow advantage. The decision to keep either two or three quarterbacks on the 53-man roster complicates matters, as maintaining three could require cuts in other areas where the team seeks depth.
Howell's contract is fully guaranteed at $2.5 million for the season, meaning the Cowboys would bear that expense if he is let go.
