Dozie Ezukanma, a TCU wide receiver, was hospitalized for three days due to a brain bleed, concussion, and other injuries after an alleged assault by teammate Jacob Fields. The incident occurred on August 13 at the Walsh Athletic Complex, as detailed in an arrest warrant affidavit obtained by the Fort Worth Star Telegram.
Fields reportedly punched Ezukanma in the head while he was seated and looking at his phone, followed by a kick to the back of the head that caused Ezukanma to lose consciousness. Witnesses noted that Ezukanma later could only recall being in the training room and asking teammates about the incident.
Ezukanma experienced severe headaches and ringing in his ears, leading to his hospitalization where scans confirmed a brain bleed, resulting in his transfer to the ICU. He was discharged on August 16, having also suffered a strained AC joint in his shoulder.
Fields was dismissed from the team on August 18 and charged with aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury, later released on a $50,000 bond. He expressed remorse in a text message to TCU police, stating he made an emotional decision and offered to cover Ezukanma's hospital expenses.
TCU head coach Sonny Dykes remarked on the incident's atypical nature for the team and Fields, as Ezukanma was expected to be a starting wide receiver for the upcoming season. TCU's next game is scheduled against Grambling on September 12.
