Marist Liufau, an outside linebacker for the Dallas Cowboys, will undergo surgery for a fractured forearm and is anticipated to be sidelined for multiple weeks. This was confirmed by head coach Brian Schottenheimer, who noted that the injury took place during a tackle in the first quarter of a preseason game against the New Orleans Saints.

Liufau, who was selected in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft after playing at Notre Dame, has been a consistent presence for the Cowboys, participating in all 34 games over the last two seasons. As he enters his third year, he has transitioned from inside to outside linebacker, receiving support from coaches and teammates throughout this adjustment.

Last season, his involvement in special teams increased significantly, with Liufau playing 75% of the snaps compared to 35% in his rookie year. He has emphasized the importance of special teams for securing roster spots, stating that personal pride must be set aside for the benefit of the team.

Schottenheimer acknowledged the impact of Liufau's absence, saying that it is a challenging aspect of the sport. The team will move forward with the surgery and adapt to the situation, as Liufau plays a vital role in all four phases of special teams.

With roster decisions approaching, Liufau's recovery may affect the Cowboys' strategy, especially with other injury concerns looming. NFL teams can designate up to two players for return, but those players must miss at least the first four weeks of the season.
