Florida State will be without freshman linebackers Izayia Williams and Daylen Green for the rest of the season, coach Mike Norvell said. Veteran linebacker Blake Nichelson is expected to play again this year, but he will be sidelined for an extended period. Norvell said the openings could give other players opportunities on defense and special teams.
The Seminoles are also continuing preparations after athletic director Michael Alford was fired. Norvell credited Alford and his wife, Laura, for their contributions to the program. Bruce Warwick is serving as interim athletic director, and Norvell called him an experienced professional who should do well in the role. Players were off Monday, with Norvell planning to address the change with them Tuesday.
Florida State is 1-1 after its disappointing loss to SMU, but Norvell said the result did not reduce his confidence in the team. He cited quarterback Ashton Daniels’ work during the week, including his practice habits and focus on controllable areas. Alabama’s defense, Norvell said, is fast and explosive and has a larger front than last season.
The Seminoles will need balance, strong individual matchups and big plays, while also accounting for Alabama quarterback Keelon Russell’s ability to run outside the pocket.
