The Dallas Cowboys signed running back Israel Abanikanda from their practice squad after Malik Davis suffered a hip injury that will require surgery. Abanikanda is expected to become the third running back behind Javonte Williams and Emari Demercado, who Dallas claimed from Kansas City. Fullback Hunter Luepke also remains on the roster.
Davis had been competing with Jaydon Blue for the No. 2 role behind Williams through training camp. Dallas waived Blue after the preseason and later added Demercado. A projection for the season opener at the New York Giants set the over-under at 48.5 points.
Nick Harris chose Dallas to win and forecast a score below that mark, citing the Cowboys’ experience, the first week of the season and possible weather.
Coach Brian Schottenheimer said linebacker DeMarvion Overshown will take on much of the work communicating defensive calls through the helmet. He said other players are ready to do so if defensive packages require a change.
Dallas is also weighing offensive-line options, Blogging The Boys reported. Veteran tackle D.J. Humphries became available when Washington released him.
Arizona selected Humphries 24th overall in 2015, and he became a full-time starter the following year before injuries affected his time with the Cardinals through 2023. Receiver Ryan Flournoy’s contract includes a $1.5 million base salary, a $500,000 roster bonus and $1.25 million in remaining signing-bonus proration.
