George Odum is in his ninth NFL season, with previous stops at Indianapolis and San Francisco. He has received one All-Pro honor with each team. Career totals listed in reports include 205 tackles, three interceptions, four forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries; another listing credits him with 209 tackles, the same interception, forced-fumble and recovery totals, plus 12 starts in 109 games.
The Houston Texans elevated Odum for their game against the Cincinnati Bengals, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 reported Sept. 19. It is Odum’s second practice squad call-up this season. In Houston’s 36-31 loss to Buffalo, he played 71% of the Texans’ special teams snaps and made one tackle.
Caleb Bullock and Reed Blankenship are healthy, but Houston is using Odum for special teams. Coach DeMeco Ryans previously praised Odum’s preseason playmaking. Pro Football Focus ranked him 26th among 29 Houston special teams players against Buffalo, while noting that its overall grade does not show performance in each phase.
Under the current arrangement, Houston can elevate Odum once more. The Texans are scheduled to play the Colts in Week 3, which could be his final call-up before the team would need to place him on the 53-man roster or use another option.
