The Houston Texans are preparing for their last preseason matchup with the Carolina Panthers, but head coach DeMeco Ryans has confirmed that no starters will play. This decision follows a joint practice with the Panthers earlier in the week, which allowed the team to assess their first unit in a practice environment.
In the Texans' previous preseason contests, starters have had minimal playing time. Quarterback C.J. Stroud and running back Woody Marks participated in just one drive last week during their game against the Las Vegas Raiders. Additionally, the starting offensive line has only been involved in two drives over both games. The starting defense has not appeared on the field at all this preseason.
Ryans explained that this cautious strategy is deliberate, as the team is content with how their starters performed during the joint practice. The decision to rest the starters may also be influenced by injuries to key players like wide receiver Jayden Higgins and offensive tackle Braden Smith, prompting the need to reduce the risk of further injuries.
As the Texans look ahead to the regular season, they will rely on backup quarterbacks Davis Mills and Brett Rypien to lead the team against the Panthers. This game will provide a final chance for players to demonstrate their abilities before the Texans finalize their 53-man roster.
The Texans will open their season against the Buffalo Bills at Reliant Stadium, where starters are anticipated to make their first appearance of the season.
