Texas Tech Red Raiders defeated the Sam Houston Bearkats 49-14 on Saturday at Galaxy Stadium in Lubbock, extending their undefeated season to 4-0. The Red Raiders controlled the game from the opening whistle, building a substantial lead that Sam Houston was unable to overcome despite a brief scoring burst in the second quarter.

The venue drew an attendance of 59,704 fans who witnessed a decisive home victory.

The game’s momentum shifted dramatically in the second quarter when Texas Tech’s defense generated two consecutive touchdowns. Austin Romaine returned an interception 15 yards for a score, followed shortly by another interception return of 31 yards for a touchdown. These plays extended the Red Raiders’ lead to 21-0 before the Bearkats could respond. Stone Harrington successfully kicked the extra points for both defensive scores.

Offense Diversifies Scoring Options

Texas Tech’s offense demonstrated versatility throughout the contest, utilizing both the running and passing games to maintain pressure. Will Hammond completed 17 of 29 passes for 224 yards and one touchdown, though he also threw three interceptions. The Red Raiders’ ground attack was led by Cameron Dickey, who rushed for 91 yards on 12 carries and scored two touchdowns.

Dickey opened the scoring with a one-yard run in the first quarter and added a 13-yard touchdown in the third period.

Kenny Johnson contributed to the receiving corps with three catches for 60 yards. In the final two quarters, the Red Raiders added scores through different offensive schemes. Coy Eakin caught a 21-yard pass from Hammond in the third quarter, while Will Hammond himself rushed for a 23-yard touchdown in the fourth.

Malcolm Simmons finished the game with a 27-yard reception off Thomas Castellanos, securing the final points of the 49-14 margin.

Bearkats Show Resilience in Second Quarter

Sam Houston entered the game with a 1-3 record and found their rhythm primarily in the second quarter. Landyn Locke passed for 195 yards on 23 of 37 attempts, throwing two touchdowns and two interceptions. Tim Burns Jr. caught a 52-yard touchdown pass from Locke, while Chris Reed added a 9-yard score, giving the Bearkats a 14-21 deficit at halftime.

Alton McCaskill rushed for 25 yards on eight carries, providing a modest ground presence for the visitors. However, Sam Houston failed to score in the second half, managing only 14 total points for the game. The Red Raiders’ ability to score in every quarter, accumulating 14 points in the second, third, and fourth periods, proved too much for the Bearkats to handle.

The final score of 49-14 reflects a comprehensive performance by the home team, leaving Texas Tech with a perfect 4-0 record and Sam Houston at 1-3.
