Collin College will get $346,697 in state money for welding equipment, one of 84 career-training grants Gov. Greg Abbott's office announced Monday, Oct. 12.
The award is meant to train 120 students as welders, according to the announcement. Collin College holds every one of its welding courses at its Technical Campus, 2550 Bending Branch Way in Allen, the program's web page says. The governor's announcement does not say where the new equipment will be installed.
A second grant ties back to the same program. Blue Ridge ISD will receive $346,185 to train 135 students as welders in partnership with Collin College.
Where the money comes from
The awards come through the Texas Workforce Commission's Jobs and Education for Texans program, or JET, which pays start-up costs for equipment in career and technical training that leads to jobs in high-demand occupations. This round totals more than $20 million, split among 27 public junior, state and technical colleges and 57 school districts and charter schools.
In the first year, the state expects the equipment to help train more than 7,400 students.
"A skilled workforce is essential to the success of Texas businesses and the strength of our economy," TWC Chairman Joe Esparza said in the announcement.
