Skaters and hockey players have about one more week on the ice before Allen Community Ice Rink shuts down for a month.
From Tuesday, Oct. 13, through Saturday, Nov. 14, the rink inside Credit Union of Texas Event Center will suspend every regular program, rental and public skate time, the city announced. The space is needed for League of Legends Worlds 26, the esports world championship, and the city says the event's scale requires temporary use of the rink area.
Programs and skate times continue on their normal schedules until Oct. 13.
The city is pointing figure skaters and players to the city's other recreation facilities for cross-training during the break and invites questions through its contact page.
What is coming to the arena
The event center is hosting three stages of the championship over about two and a half weeks. According to the venue's schedule, the Swiss Stage runs Oct. 23-31, the quarterfinals Nov. 3-6 and the semifinals Nov. 7-8. Those rounds settle which teams move on to the championship's final match.
City officials said in July that no previous host city has held all three of those stages in one building. Earlier host cities include London, Paris, Seoul, Berlin, San Francisco and New York.
The tournament draws a large online audience. The city cited 2024 figures of 190 million hours watched worldwide and a peak of 6.86 million people watching one match at the same time.
