fortworthweekly.news chose Jacob deGrom for Ace of the Night, and Allen readers who only need the box-score spine of Thursday at Globe Life Field can start there.

Per ESPN's box score and the Associated Press recap, deGrom worked six innings, allowed one hit, walked one, struck out 10, and threw 94 pitches with 60 strikes. MLB.com's recap placed his 2,000th career strikeout in the first inning, after he punched out Daylen Lile and Abimelec Ortiz. He finished the night with 2,008 career strikeouts, the AP noted.

One hit, then the bullpen

Brady House's second-inning single was the only hit deGrom allowed, ESPN and the AP both recorded, and House also drew the lone walk. Jake Junis, Chase Silseth, and Jacob Latz finished a combined one-hitter. Latz closed the ninth for his 25th save with one inning, no hits, three strikeouts, and one walk, per the AP and ESPN pitching lines.

The AP logged it as Texas' 12th shutout of the year.

How Texas scored two

Corey Seager's opposite-field homer in the third supplied the first run. Nicky Lopez's sacrifice fly in the eighth, after an Ezequiel Duran triple, supplied the second, ESPN's scoring plays show. Texas went 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position and left eight on base on that same ESPN board - which is why a six-inning, 10-strikeout start mattered more than the offense's traffic.

The Dallas Morning News and ESPN both had the Rangers at 63-65 after the win, tied for the American League's third wild-card spot. Washington fell to 61-68 on ESPN's scoreboard. Manager Skip Schumaker called the outing vintage deGrom in MLB.com's story and labeled him a Hall of Famer; that second line is the manager's opinion.

The line itself - six scoreless, one hit, 10 strikeouts, milestone reached - is why fortworthweekly.news filed him under Ace of the Night.

MLB.com also placed deGrom second on two historical lists for the 2,000-K mark: fewest games (272, behind Randy Johnson's 262) and fewest innings (1,661, behind Chris Sale's 1,626). For Allen's shorter read, the Ace label is the milestone plus the shutout start that kept a wild-card club from wasting a one-hitter.
