ARLINGTON, Texas - Nicky Lopez did not collect a hit Saturday. He still scored, occupied a base through an error, and helped the Texas Rangers manufacture two runs before the lineup started stacking doubles and fly balls.
Lopez finished 0-for-1 with a walk and a run scored in Texas' 6-2 win over the Toronto Blue Jays at Globe Life Field, per ESPN's box. He reached in the second, moved up when Danny Jansen's fielder's choice and Andrés Giménez's throwing error scrambled the infield, and came home on José Soriano's wild pitch.
The Associated Press wrote that Texas scored twice in that inning without a base hit - walk, hit batter, error, wild pitch - the kind of traffic a September West race can live on.
Second-inning chaos
Josh Jung had already homered in the first, his 11th. In the second, Lopez's trip around the bases made it 3-0 after Jansen's RBI force. ESPN's play-by-play credits Lopez with scoring on the wild pitch while Jansen moved to second.
Lopez later drew an intentional walk from Paul Sewald and was hit by a pitch from Soriano at another point in the night, per ESPN's pitching details - more evidence that Toronto kept putting him on base even when he was not finding hits.
A 0-for-1 line will not fill a fantasy bulletin. On a night when Texas went 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position, simply being the runner who scored on a wild pitch mattered.
Relievers and the West
Cal Quantrill left after 1 1/3 innings with right lat tightness; an MRI is set for Sunday, and Skip Schumaker had no update, the AP reported. Jordan Montgomery (1-0) threw 3 2/3 hitless innings. Nathan Eovaldi, Robert Garcia, Chase Silseth and Jacob Latz each logged an inning as five relievers held Toronto to six hits.
