A quilt begun in the 1940s and not finished until the 1950s is the centerpiece of a free talk at Allen Public Library on Thursday evening.
Local quilter Betty Matthews will cover the history of quilting and show several of her own pieces at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 15, in the library's Civic Auditorium at 300 N. Allen Drive, according to the city's community calendar. No ticket or registration is needed.
Among the pieces she plans to show is an on-point ocean waves quilt that the listing describes as a community effort. A member of Matthews' family began piecing it in the 1940s. Another relative finished it in the 1950s, and members of First United Methodist Church in Fenton, Missouri, hand-quilted it, the listing says.
Matthews taught sixth grade at four Allen ISD schools when they were new and later worked as the librarian at Ford Middle School. The listing says she also belongs to the Scarlett O'Hatters and the Allen Retired Teachers Association, has sewn dresses for a mission in Honduras and helps distribute 11,000 Christmas stockings to American military members around the world.
The program is listed for adults and older adults.
Animals on stage Wednesday
The day before, the library hosts Wild Things Zoofari from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14, also in the Civic Auditorium. The free program brings animals for children to see up close and is recommended for ages 5 and older.
Seating is capped at 275. Tickets are handed out at the Children's Desk starting 30 minutes before the show.
