Texas public school teachers with gaming or esports projects posted on DonorsChoose could see them paid for in full next week, under a $500,000 campaign that Riot Games tied to its League of Legends world championship, which moves to Allen later this month.

Riot announced Monday that it will fully fund eligible gaming and esports classroom requests in the three states hosting this year's Worlds: California, Texas and New York. The company set one day for each state, starting with California on Oct. 12. Texas is next, on Monday, Oct. 19, followed by New York on Nov. 9.

Allen's Credit Union of Texas Event Center hosts the tournament's Swiss Stage, quarterfinals and semifinals from Oct. 23 through Nov. 8, according to the City of Allen. The city has said Allen is the first host in the championship's history to hold all three rounds at one venue. The final is set for Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

How it works

DonorsChoose is an education nonprofit where public school teachers post requests for classroom materials and donors pick which ones to support. Riot said any money left at the end of the campaign will go to a matching drive starting Dec. 1, Giving Tuesday, for gaming and esports projects nationwide.

The company said gaming-related fundraising requests on the site have grown 126% in recent years as more schools start esports teams, teach coding and use games in lessons. Riot said it has funded more than $1 million in gaming and esports resources for nearly 1,000 public school teachers since 2023.

Teachers who want a project considered need to post it on DonorsChoose. Riot's announcement did not spell out the eligibility rules beyond gaming and esports projects from teachers in the host states.
