NHL.com's Tracey Myers, in a Sept. 16 season preview, put the 2025-26 finish at 50-20-12 and second in the Central, followed by a Western Conference First Round loss. The 2026-27 regular season begins league-wide on Sept. 29, Myers noted, while the Stars themselves open Friday, Oct. 2, against the St. Louis Blues at American Airlines Center.
Yahoo Sports, citing the team's announcement, listed puck drop at 7:00 p.m. CT.
The roster thesis is blunt. Myers wrote that Dallas did not add much in free agency, so the same group must finally deliver a Cup the franchise has not won since 1999.
Robertson's one-year bet sets the temperature
Jason Robertson signed a one-year, $12 million contract on July 21 after leading the Stars with 96 points (45 goals, 51 assists) in 82 games, Myers reported. NHL.com's later Stars.com feature quoted general manager Jim Nill saying the dressing room made clear it wanted Robertson back, while also acknowledging the club lost forward Mavrik Bourque to cap math.
A one-year deal on a 45-goal winger is not a soft landing. It is a nine-month referendum on whether this core still climbs.
What "familiar" actually means on the ice
Myers listed Jake Oettinger's workload - 53-plus starts in each of the past four seasons - as a playoff prerequisite, not a luxury. She also flagged Tyler Seguin's health: the 34-year-old "may not be ready" for the Oct. 2 opener after recent injury seasons, but remains a plus whenever he returns.
Last season's supporting metrics, per Myers, included second in goals-against per game (2.71), ninth in goals for (3.33), second on the power play (28.6%), and a penalty kill that sat 13th at 80.3%.
Four players cleared 63 points or more last season, Myers wrote. Firepower is not the question. Finishing rounds is.
