The rapid expansion of data centers in North Texas is creating a significant demand for electricians and HVAC technicians, leading to a workforce shortage. With at least 248 data centers planned across Texas, 86 of which are in North Texas, the need for skilled workers is rising faster than the supply can meet.
The state's grid operator, ERCOT, has indicated that data centers are responsible for a large portion of the new electricity demand, with projections suggesting that statewide demand could reach 368 gigawatts by 2032.
This growth necessitates a substantial number of electricians and HVAC specialists to support the facilities, yet the Texas Workforce Commission estimates that nearly 3,000 additional electricians will be needed in the Dallas, Tarrant, and North Central regions by 2032.
The labor shortage is not confined to Texas alone; nationwide estimates suggest a shortfall of up to 499,000 workers in data-center construction. The competition for skilled labor has led to increased wages, with workers on data-center projects earning about a third more than their counterparts in traditional construction roles.
