The handset allows frontline workers to run enterprise applications directly on the radio, eliminating the need to carry a separate smartphone for data-intensive tasks.
The device supports workflow software for work order management, scanning, messaging, and video within a single handheld unit.
The Ion features a color touchscreen, an integrated camera, and over-the-air software update capabilities. Motorola Solutions states that the Android foundation enables compatibility with widely used productivity tools and custom in-house applications. The company highlights that this design helps IT teams maintain current software across fleets without removing devices from active service.
Connectivity is a central feature of the Ion. The radio supports digital mobile radio within the MOTOTRBO ecosystem alongside broadband connections via LTE and Wi-Fi. This dual capability allows workers to roam between land-mobile-radio networks and LTE data, maintaining voice communication while accessing cloud-based services. This functionality is intended for sites spread across large campuses or multiple locations where radio coverage may be limited.
The device is built with a rugged housing designed to withstand drops, dust, and moisture. Motorola Solutions lists IP compliance for dust and water resistance, along with testing to military standards for shock and vibration. The company positions the Ion for use in utilities, transportation, and oil and gas sectors.
Product managers note that the hardware was designed around trials in distribution centers and railyards to ensure it can handle daily physical abuse while providing a modern software experience.
Beyond voice and data, the Ion incorporates barcode scanning via the touchscreen and external accessories. Workers can use the integrated camera to document damaged packages or equipment and send images over secure networks. The device is compatible with the existing Motorola Solutions accessory ecosystem, including batteries, remote speaker microphones, holsters, earpieces, and in-vehicle chargers.
