Motorola Solutions announced new capabilities for its Assist AI platform designed to assist law enforcement personnel in the field. The update introduces the ability for officers to listen to live 911 calls and access automatic real-time translations of non-English calls. These features are integrated into the company’s Lightning mobile application, which was acquired through the purchase of RapidDeploy in February 2025.
Todd Piett, senior vice president of command-center software at Motorola Solutions, explained that the live audio feature allows officers to view the computer-aided dispatch context on their mobile devices and click to listen to the call. This functionality is particularly useful for officers who are in the vicinity of an incident but were not the primary dispatch.
Piett noted that users can join the call live, replay it, or read the transcription to gain full context before or during their response.
Jeremiah Nelson, corporate vice president for Motorola Solutions, stated that the update aims to accelerate response times by removing communication barriers between call handlers and the community. He emphasized that speed and clarity are critical for improving safety outcomes in emergency situations.
The new Interpreter Agent automatically identifies the language of a caller and provides an English transcript, eliminating the need to contact external translation services. Motorola Solutions claims this feature can reduce response time by more than 70 seconds.
Piett clarified that the Interpreter Agent allows officers to view English transcripts of foreign-language calls immediately. If dispatched to the scene, officers can later listen to the original audio if time permits. Both the live audio and translation features are available immediately through the Lightning application. Other methods for accessing these tools are currently under development.
