Hugs Café Inc., a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing job training and employment opportunities for adults with disabilities, has officially opened its new headquarters in McKinney. The grand opening took place on July 2, showcasing a significant investment of $10 million in the local community.

The new facility spans 13,500 square feet over two stories and consolidates the café, a hospitality training academy, and administrative offices into one location. It is situated at 221 Andrews St. in downtown McKinney and includes features such as a training kitchen, four classrooms, a rooftop deck, and an outdoor patio.

This expansion allows Hugs Café to enhance its training capabilities, effectively doubling the number of participants it can serve at any given time. The organization can now accommodate up to 12 trainees per class, with the potential to train as many as 32 individuals during each 12-week semester, according to founder and CEO Ruth Thompson.

Funding for the project was supported by a $970,000 contribution from the McKinney Community Development Corp. The construction was managed by KDC, with architectural design by Corgan and contracting services provided by Brasfield & Gorrie. The construction commenced in May 2026, culminating in the recent opening of the facility.

This new headquarters marks a significant step forward for Hugs Café in its mission to prepare adults with disabilities for careers in the hospitality sector, ultimately fostering greater employment opportunities within the community.
