Allen overcomes early deficit to defeat Southlake Carroll 56-35

The Allen Eagles erased a 14-point hole to record 701 yards of total offense in a non-district win.

Allen defeated Southlake Carroll 56-35 in a non-district matchup played Friday at Dragon Stadium. The Eagles trailed by 14 points early in the game after Carroll scored twice in the opening seven minutes. Allen responded with 35 points before halftime and maintained its lead for the remainder of the contest.

The comeback began in the first quarter when junior running back Jrue Simmons scored on a four-yard run. Shortly after, junior defensive back Dominic Butler blocked a punt, and sophomore Raiden Johnson recovered the ball in the end zone to tie the game at 14. Simmons extended the lead with an 83-yard touchdown run in the second quarter, giving Allen a 21-14 advantage.

The Eagles entered the break leading 35-21.

Sophomore quarterback Ty Snell completed 18 of 25 passes for 305 yards and three touchdowns without an interception. Sophomore wide receiver Zach Williams caught eight passes for 130 yards and two scores, while junior Josyah Johnson added four receptions for 109 yards and a touchdown.

On the ground, Simmons rushed for 151 yards and two touchdowns on eight carries, and senior Lyndon Spriggs contributed 91 yards and a score on 13 attempts.

Allen finished with 701 total yards of offense, including 396 on the ground. Carroll recorded 472 yards, led by senior Dane Wilson’s 111 rushing yards and junior Hudson Tomcheck’s 173 passing yards and three touchdowns.

Head coach Lee Wiginton noted that the team’s response to the early deficit was encouraging. He stated that seeing the players recover against a strong opponent made him feel good moving forward. Wiginton also highlighted the running backs’ determination, describing their effort as more than just a game. The team is scheduled to travel to Prosper for its next contest.
