The Dallas Cowboys have changed their running back group, releasing Israel Abanikanda and adding Tyler Goodson from the Atlanta Falcons. The move came after Dallas recorded 69 rushing yards against the New York Giants in Week 1.
Abanikanda appeared in six NFL games before his release, all for the New York Jets during the 2023 season. The former Pitt running back had his strongest college season in 2022, when he ran 239 times for 1,431 yards and 20 touchdowns. He did not secure a regular role during his NFL career.
Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer said New York’s defensive front affected the running game early by creating penetration, and he said Dallas was physically outplayed at the line of scrimmage. Schottenheimer also said Javonte Williams struggled to find openings at the beginning of the game. He said the Cowboys made adjustments after halftime.
