The Dallas Cowboys and New Orleans Saints have received fines of $500,000 each from the NFL due to a brawl that occurred during their joint practice earlier this week. The league has underscored the importance of sportsmanship, especially during joint practices, where unsportsmanlike actions can result in injuries.
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has acknowledged the seriousness of the fines and intends to appeal the ruling. He expressed that the incidents during practice, which included players removing their helmets and engaging in fights, do not represent the teams or the league well. "That's pretty harsh, I mean, pretty stiff," Jones stated, reflecting on the league's position.
Should the fines be maintained, Jones indicated he would also penalize the players involved in the altercations. Notably, linebacker Donovan Ezeiruaku was cited for removing the helmet of Saints offensive tackle Taliese Fuaga and striking offensive lineman Erik McCoy.
Saints rookie wide receiver Brock Rechsteiner was also mentioned for his involvement in multiple fights, including a confrontation with Cowboys cornerback Caelan Carson and executing a German suplex on Cowboys safety Jalen Thompson. Further information regarding the appeal process or additional player fines has not yet been provided.
