Doug McNamee, the new athletic director at Baylor University, has highlighted the importance of momentum in the football program, rather than specifying a win total for head coach Dave Aranda to secure his position beyond the 2026 season. McNamee stated, "It’s not about the numbers.
It’s the momentum; it’s the feel, and it’s the vibe around the program," as reported by CBS Sports college football writer Shehan Jeyarajah.
As Aranda enters his seventh season, McNamee called for greater commitment from supporters, urging them to attend games and contribute financially to name, image, and likeness (NIL) initiatives. He noted the need for a competitive environment within the Big 12 and adapting to changes in NIL opportunities.
Aranda's record at Baylor stands at 36-37, with a notable Big 12 championship and Sugar Bowl victory in 2021, but the team has faced challenges since then, including a disappointing 5-7 finish in 2025.
McNamee, who took over the athletic department in December, will evaluate Aranda's performance in 2026, emphasizing that progress and support are crucial for the program's future as the new season approaches, beginning on September 5 against Auburn.
