Motorola Solutions announced the launch of SafetyCam, a wearable artificial intelligence assistant designed to support safety and security for retail employees and other frontline enterprise staff. The device integrates enterprise-grade video recording, two-way voice capabilities, a dedicated panic button, and the company’s conversational Assist AI into one unit.

The system moves beyond passive recording by offering proactive threat detection. A front-facing display allows individuals being recorded to see that they are on camera, while a remote talk-down feature enables off-site personnel to intervene in customer conflicts. The device captures first-person video, voice transcripts, and location data to create real-time incident narratives for remote supervisors and security teams.

Dr. Read Hayes, executive director of the Loss Prevention Research Council, noted that retail workers face increasing intimidation and unpredictable behavior on sales floors. He stated that visible safety technology can discourage dangerous behavior before it occurs, support employees during tense situations, and preserve clear records when incidents happen.

SafetyCam includes a built-in voice assistant to help associates coordinate operations through one-on-one or group calls, query workplace policies, look up product details, and use real-time translation for over 50 languages. Mahesh Saptharishi, executive vice president and chief technology officer at Motorola Solutions, described the tool as purpose-built for store environments where fragmented tools are ineffective.

The announcement coincides with data from the National Retail Federation indicating that 73% of retailers have reported heightened aggression and violence from customers. Additionally, 44% of retailers cited a lack of evidence as a primary barrier to reporting theft to law enforcement.

Paul Bremner, practice lead and principal analyst at Omdia, observed that retail organizations are seeking to strengthen worker safety and improve incident visibility. He suggested that integrating AI assistants onto body-worn video devices can help connect frontline events with faster responses and provide stronger evidence capture.

Motorola Solutions employs about 375 people in Allen, according to local government records.
