Lovejoy defeats Reedy 56-17; Lone Star beats Royse City 41-26

Lovejoy and Frisco Lone Star both secured victories in their 5A football season openers on Friday.

Lovejoy defeated Frisco Reedy 56-17 in their season opener on Friday. The Leopards generated 603 yards of total offense and scored 14 points in each quarter. This marked the first matchup between the two teams since 2019.

Junior quarterback Nixon Slaughter and junior running back Luke Gahan, both promoted to starting roles, accounted for all eight touchdowns for Lovejoy. Slaughter completed passes for 257 yards and four scores, while Gahan rushed for 152 yards and four touchdowns. Sophomore receiver Jeremiah Johnson caught five passes for 145 yards and three scores, and junior Coleman Reaugh added six receptions for 110 yards.

Reedy, which was affected by early injuries to offensive starters, managed 161 yards of offense. Sophomore Jackson Harn replaced senior Lincoln Harn early in the first quarter and passed for 92 yards and a touchdown with one interception.

The Lions narrowed the gap to 28-17 at halftime after Kasen Kerr returned an interception for a score, but Lovejoy added 28 unanswered points in the second half.

In another 5A contest, Frisco Lone Star defeated Royse City 41-26. The Rangers built a 35-12 lead by halftime. Senior Karece Hoyt caught passes for 117 yards and four touchdowns on ten touches.

Junior quarterback Trey Wright passed for 161 yards and rushed for 140 yards, adding three touchdowns. Wright connected with Hoyt on a 66-yard pass in the second quarter and ran for a 66-yard score in the fourth quarter. Lone Star outgained Royse City 439-238.

Other results included Prosper Richland defeating Aubrey 56-49 in overtime, with junior Brighton Jones passing for 191 yards and four touchdowns. Celina beat Legacy School of Sport Sciences 21-19, with senior Evan Koehne scoring in the fourth quarter. Frisco Independence defeated Lubbock Roosevelt 49-20, and Mesquite Poteet beat Everman 62-35.
