University of Houston football player Carmello Brooks remains suspended while two criminal cases are pending, his attorney said. Brooks appeared in court Monday on an allegation involving the assault of a pregnant person and a separate criminal mischief charge tied to an August dispute in northwest Harris County.
Nariah Harley, the woman connected to the assault case, asked the judge to dismiss the charges. She said an argument occurred inside Brooks’ apartment last week, and that Brooks repeatedly told her to leave before lifting her and placing her outside when she refused. Harley said Brooks called police himself because she would not leave.
She also said Brooks is the father of her baby, that she does not consider herself a victim and that police misunderstood what happened.
Brooks’ attorney, Brent Wasserstein, said officers’ body cameras recorded the encounter. Prosecutors plan to review that footage and a 911 call Brooks made, he said. The other case alleges Brooks damaged a door handle after a dispute involving another woman and her sister.
Family members said Brooks, those women and Harley grew up in Killeen, where Brooks and the other women attended high school. Harley attends Texas Southern University. Wasserstein said he hopes Brooks can attend classes.
