SMU senior Enzo Panozzo was named a co-recipient of the Atlantic Coast Conference’s defensive player of the week award after the Mustangs defeated NC State 1-0. The conference announced the honor Tuesday, and Notre Dame’s Blake Kelly shared it with him.
Panozzo, a Sarasota, Florida, native, scored the only goal in SMU’s ACC home opener while serving as captain of the defense. The Mustangs limited NC State to eight shots, with two reaching the target, and posted their fifth shutout of the season. This is Panozzo’s first weekly honor from the ACC, while SMU has received two conference weekly awards this season.
Following the win, SMU moved to No. 3 in the United Soccer Coaches poll. The Mustangs have a 7-0-1 overall record and are 2-0-0 in conference play. Their next ACC match is scheduled for Sunday at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia.
