The SMU Mustangs are enhancing their wide receiver lineup with the addition of transfers Jalen Hale from Alabama and Yannick Smith from East Carolina. This move follows the graduation of top receivers Jordan Hudson and Romello Brinson, who collectively contributed over 1,400 receiving yards and nine touchdowns last season.
Quarterback Kevin Jennings is currently recovering from a hand injury, limiting his ability to work with several key offensive players. In his absence, redshirt freshman quarterback Ty Hawkins has stepped in, highlighting Smith's ability to make contested catches and Hale's speed.
Hale, a former five-star recruit, has rebounded from a severe knee injury that kept him sidelined for the entire 2024 season, now showcasing his explosive skills at SMU.
Wide receivers coach Rob Likens praised Hale's SEC experience and toughness, which he believes will be advantageous for the team's strategy. Smith, with over 1,000 receiving yards and eight touchdowns from his East Carolina tenure, is recognized for his aggressive style, fitting well with the Mustangs' downfield passing game.
As the Mustangs gear up for their season opener against Florida State on September 7, they are focused on building team chemistry. Senior Yamir Knight and sophomore Jalen Cooper are also expected to play significant roles. Cornerbacks coach Kyle Ward noted that the competitive spirit brought by Hale and Smith is positively impacting the team's overall performance.
