Allen's animal shelter is inviting the public, and their pets, in for an open house on Saturday, Nov. 14.
The city lists the event as come-and-go. Visitors can take behind-the-scenes tours of the shelter, browse local vendors, check out a Touch-a-Truck, and pick up freebies and giveaways, according to the city's November events roundup published Monday.
Pet owners can get their animals microchipped for free and have them groomed on site. Adoptions will be half price for the day, the city says.
The shelter's regular adoption fee for dogs and cats is $95, which covers a microchip, vaccination, spay or neuter surgery and a year of Allen pet registration, according to Allen Animal Services. Fees for birds, rabbits, guinea pigs and ferrets are lower.
Staff screen prospective owners, and an animal control officer can refuse an adoption if there is reason to believe the animal would not be properly housed or cared for, or is wanted for resale.
The shelter is at 770 S. Allen Heights Drive and is run by the Allen Police Department's animal services unit. The city's announcement does not give hours for the open house. On a normal Saturday the shelter is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and it closes on Wednesdays. Questions can go to Allen Animal Services at 214-509-4378.
